James Austin

Director of Data Strategy and Policy - NHS Digital

James has been Director of Data Strategy and Policy at NHS Digital since 6 September 2021. James’ remit covers setting and delivery of strategy with a focus on enhancing capabilities around collection, curation, analysis and dissemination of data. James also oversees complex data programmes including transformation of device registries, integration of the National Disease Registration Service into NHS Digital, and work with private healthcare providers.
He has a background in system leadership across the NHS and third sector. In the NHS he has previously worked in strategy, commissioning and regulation at national, regional and local levels. More recently working as a director within the third sector he has overseen improvement of health and care outcomes at Macmillan Cancer Support, and as an advocate for active travel at Sustrans.
James has a particular interest in turning great strategy and policy into change across organisational boundaries with tangible benefit for citizens.
