Michael is an Innovation Lead for the Biomedical Catalyst funding programme at Innovate UK part of UK Research & Innovation. The Biomedical Catalyst has provided over £210m grant funding to innovative healthcare SMEs since 2012.
After completing his Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering at University of Nottingham he worked in the cardiac rhythm management (CRM) industry for 10 years for Guidant (later acquired by Boston Scientific) and BIOTRONIK where he led the UK & Eire business.
In 2016, Michael moved to the Medicines & Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) as Group Manager for the Medical Devices Safety & Surveillance Group and led a team of 50 engineers and scientists whose primary focus was patient safety. No medical device is without risk and the team helped monitor the safety of devices and sought to work collaboratively with manufacturers and stakeholders to ensure that when issues arose, they were dealt with appropriately and promptly. The team were also heavily involved in the development of standards, future regulation and pre-market clinical investigations of non-CE marked medical devices.
